This is amazing. I’ve been studying casual games a lot over the last year, and I’m convinced that novel gameplay is something that only developers care about. Hardcore gamers like to claim that they want novel gameplay, but they really want the same familiar mechanics presented in a way that feels new. Casual players just want to feel like they’re directing a music video. In some ways, gameplay is like modern art to juicing’s Thomas Kinkade. If you want to be highly respected in your community, make something truly novel. If you want to sell games, put a small twist on something proven and juice the hell out of it.

This brilliant presentation should be watched by any aspiring indie game developer. These tactics are what makes PopCap so successful in turning very simple game mechanics (see: Pebble, Bejeweled) and making them fun and addicting. The transformation these guys make with just a few surface changes (not affecting the gameplay) is incredible.

here is a quick photo of the sim cards i have purchased so far in my travels. i have one from each country i have stayed in. it would be much easier if i could roam between the countries without paying ridiculous fees such as 4 euros per 1MB of data. its pretty silly, but buying a new sim card with prepaid data has been far cheaper overall.

so far the best deal i have come across is 10 euros for 1GB from telia talk in denmark. now i just have to figure out how to burn through 1GB in the next 30 hours.

Power is often fueled by technology. If you have more and you can do more with it, you command much more leverage and influence than if you were without. And under the salty waves of the open sea few cultures hold the reigns of technology as strongly as the Redscale kingdom. Cold-blooded and bipedal, Rescales are a race of fishpersons whose discovery of metal and rubber enabled them to develop unparalleled means of exploration and conquest, allowing them to build a great and sprawling civilization on the sandy shoals of the deep. Subsisting on a diet of non-sentient fish and aquatic vegetation, Redscales are lean and quick, able to zip through the water with ease when they’re not encumbered by burden of bulk. Their king, Lord Bubbleglub the Briny, commands the seat of power in the ornate and gilded castle at the heart of Shellspire, their central city. Built of stone and mortar, Shellspire is a winding maze of old streets and open markets bristling with commerce and activity. Redscale weaponry is built to be hydrodynamic, from their curved swords to their long arrows and harpoons, if a weapon can’t be wielded with ease in the thick atmosphere of the sea it isn’t worth the material it’s made from. Many aquatic races swear by Redscale blades and bows as their rubber-coated parts are easy to grip and their metal bits resist corrosion, on top of slicing through the sea like a baracuda on the hunt. And while merchants and craftsfish barter to sell their tools and trinkets, the real prize of the Redscale kingdom is its unique take on armorsmithing.

They call them Terranauts. Those brave Redscale soldiers, masters of the blade and bow, who answer the call to explore the lands above are intimately familiar with the incredible advancements in Redscale armory. Sacrificing their natural agility for unrivaled protection, Redscale Terranauts learn to move and work while wearing the heaviest of heavy armor, to the point that it’s an extension of their body. Terranauts cannot breathe the air above, so they rely on a series of pressurized seals within their suits of plated mail to provide them a hospitable environment in the world beyond the waves- their water-filled plate also provides them added protection from crushing or bludgeoning blows, since they’re dense with water and not air they’re extra-resistant to non-piercing attacks. Donning a helm of thick crystal-glass, Terranauts are afforded a full view of the world around them- this special glass has been carefully developed over generations to resist cuts and blows, its thick walls and spherical design making it tough to crack. And while these are both impressive technological traits, the real technological feat of the Terranauts’ armor is in the water filtration units installed on their backs, pumping air in to keep their suit of water fresh and breathable. Equipped with the finest of tools the kingdom has to offer, a company of Terranauts is well-equipped to venture beyond the deep on missions of diplomacy, asset-recovery, acquisition of resources or military exercise. And though they’re called Terranauts, their special pressurized armor allows the Redscale kingdom to expand its reaches downward as well as upward, exploring the crushing pressures of the deepest of undersea trenches. Truly there’s no point on this earth beyond the reach of the Redscale kingdom.

Travel beyond the great fields of fire, past Mount Slaughter in the great Pits of Pain. Listen for the clash of steel and bone, the rolling cries of a hungry horde of spectators and follow the scent of sweat and brimstone. Look sharp and you’ll find the Blackshard Arena, a torchlit pit of pugilists, pistoleers, pikemen and other unpleasantries fighting for fame, fortune and the favor of the crowd. Fighters from all walks and disciplines pit their wits and test their mettle against the metal and moxy of anyone else brave, desperate or foolish enough to set foot in the blood-stained sands of the Blackshard Arena. Many familiar faces pass through the twisted black-iron gates, but few among those command as much respect and fear as Korgaroth the Bloodseeker. Hailing from the great tribes of the fires themselves, Korgaroth’s people are hard-bitten lot who have clawed out a life for themselves by tooth and nail in a land of beasts who are strangers to pain and do not burn. If ever ferocity had a face of its own, truly it is Korgaroth’s.

While the rules of the Blackshard Arena are simple- you’re permitted any tool or weapon you can carry on your person- Korgaroth storms into the fray with naught but his two enormous bare hands. His thick hide soaks bullet and bludgeon alike, while his gigantic frame betrays horrific grace and agility in his movements. Korgaroth does not bring weapons into the arena because he is practiced in disarming and appropriating whatever weapon his opponents bring- while he’s at no disadvantage when he’s unarmed, the same can’t always be said of his opponents. This up-close and earth-shakingly brutal style of fighting has earned him the nickname Bloodseeker, as his alizarin skin seems to soak in the spattered blood of his bested opponents. And while Korgaroth will always hoist a fist and howl for the good of the crowd, he doesn’t fight for fame or fortune, no. Korgaroth comes to the Blackshard Arena seeking blood, but only so he could bring it back to those in need- an avid blood donor, Korgaroth visits the arena pits before making his rounds to medical clinics and hospitals throughout his travels, donating as much as and wherever possible. The money he earns and the blood he takes he donates for the health and well-being of those stricken by illness or in need of transfusion. Korgaroth the Bloodseeker believes everyone- great or small- deserves a chance to be as strong and healthy as he is, and he’ll see to it they have their chance… by any means necessary.
